Remember your dog in November
Tips to help look after your dog during the fireworks season.

Late October and early November are fireworks season.  Around half of dogs and other pets and fearful of fireworks.  Here are some steps you can take to help you to help them cope.

  • Check when big local displays are happening, so that you know when to expect fireworks.  Most fireworks happen on 31 October, 5th November or the weekends before/after.  Ask your neighbours to let you know if they are planning a fireworks party.
  •
Prepare a den for your dog to hide in during the fireworks. Encourage him to use it by hiding treats or toys there. Its fine if he choses his own hiding place (eg under a bed).  Leave him alone in his bolthole as he will feel most secure here.
  •
On the evenings you expect fireworks, make sure your dog is safely inside and that all doors and windows are shut.
  •
Make sure your dog is wearing an ID tag (as well as a microchip) in case he bolts and gets lost.
  • Take your dog for a walk and give him plenty of exercise early, before it is dark and before the fireworks start.
  • Keep the curtains drawn to reduce the noise from outside.
  • Play music or switch on the TV to help mask the noise of fireworks
  • Act normal and try to ignore any fearful behaviour.  Comforting your dog might reward and encourage this.
  • Don’t shout at or punish your dog. This will make him feel there is something to be afraid of
  • Make sure you or a family member stays in with the dog whilst the fireworks are going off.
  • If your dog reacts very badly talk to your vet to see if he can treat your dog to reduce the fear and stress caused by fireworks.
  • For further advice and info check the www.petfireworkfear.co.uk website, which includes details of the DAP products to help calm your dog.
  • The Sounds Scary CD can help treat noise phobia in dogs.
