Exeter Dog Training Club
Press Release
22 May 2008
Canines Compete in Cullompton
Around 400 handlers and their dogs will compete in Exeter Dog Training Club’s annual Open Obedience Show, which takes place on Sunday 25th May 2008 at Cullompton Football Club.
Competitors will travel from all over the South West, Wales and beyond (even from as far as Cumbria) to participate in one or more of 14 classes, according to their experience and previous level of achievement. A number of exercises will demonstrate the level of control handlers have over their dogs. Judges will rate their performance and trophies will be awarded to the winners of each class. A special freestyle class in memory of Guy Haigh (a successful competitor who tragically died of a heart attack while competing with his dog) raises money for the Vigil German Shepherd Dog Rescue charity.
The show is made possible by the excellent facilities provided by Cullompton Rangers Football Club and the Cullompton Community Association, as well as the hard work of Exeter Dog Training Club members.
Plans for the show suffered a blow when the district council turned down the planning application to renew permission for camping on the Community Association’s fields, because the area is designated flood risk area. Exeter Dog Training Club are grateful to farmer Trevor Whitfield, of Chaldon Farm, Mutterton, who has offered his land to accommodate the 88 competitors who wish to camp. Mr Whitfield is also providing camping for the Annual Whippet Jamboree in June.
Barbara Tanton, Chairman of Exeter Dog Training Club said “we are pleased to be able to run this popular annual show and would like to thank everyone who has made this possible”.
