Competitive Obedience FAQ

Q: What it is competitive obedience?

A: Competitive obedience has existed as a sport since the 1950s. Shows are run under Kennel Club rules. Competitors participate by entering classes consisting of a set of exercises which the judge will ask the handler and dog to perform. The exercises range from heelwork (on and off the lead), to a recall, control exercises such as a one minute sit and a two minute down stay. The judge will score each competitors performance in these exercises.

Q: Are there different levels?

A: There are six levels of obedience classes at shows and all dogs start from the basic Pre-Beginners Class and by a series of first prizes qualify through to Class C, the highest and most difficult. At each level the classes and exercises become more difficult. In Class C the dog will have to perform a scent discrimination exercise and also a send away and distant control exercise.

Q: Can anyone take part?

A: Dogs must be registered on the Kennel Club's Activity Register to be eligible to participate in obedience, working trials, agility, heelwork to music and flyball competitions licensed by the Kennel Club. Any dog of any ancestry may be registered , see the Kennel Club's website for more details. Then, of course, you will need to invest the time and effort to train your dog to the required level.

Q: How do I enter?

A: Shows have a closing date for entries a few weeks before the actual event, which means you must pre-book your place, and pre-pay your entrance fee. You will need to get hold of a schedule for the show by contacting the Show Secretary - see the Kennel Clubs' Show Diary. Many schedules are downloadable from the internet, from sites such as www.obedienceuk.com. Q: How much does it cost?

A: Class fees vary, but usually are no more than £4 per class. There is often a discount for members of the club organising the show. Then you will have to bear in mind the cost of travel to and from the venue, and overnight accommodation if necessary. Some shows offer basic camping facilities for a nominal fee.

Q: Are there prizes for the winners?

A: Rosettes are presented to the winners and runners-up in each class. Trophies and cups are often awarded too. Most people find the sense of achievement and the chance to progress to a higher level a reward in itself.

Q: I am interested but don't think my dog is well trained enough yet?

A: Look out for obedience classes in Companion Dog Shows, often run by charities or clubs. You do not have to be registered with the Kennel Club to enter an Companion show. Exeter Dog Training Club's Thursday evening classes are aimed primarily at pet owners wishing to train their dogs in basic obedience and work towards the Kennel Club Good Citizens Test. Club members who compete in obedience shows get together on Wednesday or Friday evenings in Woodbury to train. The 3-Way Match is a good introduction to the world of competitive obedience.
